New championship contender Mark Winterbottom says he is happy to finish second in every remaining race this year – if it means he’ll win the V8 Supercars Championship Series.
After taking second place in today’s L&H 500 at Phillip Island with co-driver Luke Youlden, Winterbottom still sits third but has moved within a race win of title leader James Courtney – 239 points in arrears.
The Orrcon Steel Ford Performance Racing driver told Speedcafe.com.au that he is happy to sacrifice race wins for the championship.
“We chipped away at the two guys ahead, and that’s all we’ve got to do,” Winterbottom said.
“We’ve got to keep beating those guys, and I’m happy to finish second for the rest of the year if that gives us the championship. The momentum is looking good for Bathurst and Homebush. We’ve got to keep getting these results – it’s an awesome feeling.”
Winterbottom says the most pleasing aspect of the Phillip Island result is the continuation of solid momentum.
“It doesn’t matter if it is next week or at Homebush, we’ve just got to get there. We’ve got momentum, we’ve just got to keep going,” he said, and also credited team-mate Youlden for the result.
“Luke did an awesome job in setting us up for today’s result. When I took over the car it was in great shape and I had enough pace to instantly make a difference to our position.”
